Piedmont recognizes the urgency of climate change as we diligently work to bring our lithium hydroxide production activities online in the United States and North America. We believe in designing our projects in a way that minimizes climate-related and other environmental impacts, and are committed to meeting the expectations outlined in our regulatory permits. Our goal is to continuously identify new opportunities to improve processes and technologies, incorporating enhancements that positively impact our emissions profile while helping to support a low-carbon footprint.
Piedmont is committed to water efficiency and protecting water availability. Our operations depend on water to help produce lithium hydroxide and mitigate environmental impacts. For example, in our mining and concentrator activities, water will be used to support dust control. We will also recycle water to be used in our concentrator and lithium hydroxide plants.
Piedmont’s portfolio is strategically centered on conventional quarrying and processing, which involves producing lithium hydroxide from spodumene ore. This method offers the benefit of using less land than other forms of mining, such as brine evaporation.
To help further minimize land use for our Carolina Lithium project, we have strategically designed the site to fully integrate our expected activities. This integration will allow for a more environmentally responsible profile as ore moves through the production process to become lithium hydroxide.
For our Tennessee Lithium project, we have planned to maximize use of our land footprint in order to minimize impact to important habitats, such as wetlands.
As part of our commitment to the planet, Piedmont works with federal, state, and local agencies to address biodiversity risks and help protect habitats near our operations. We will strive to never operate in protected areas. This includes areas designated under the World Conservation Union Designation I-IV, UNESCO Natural World Heritage Sites, UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Reserves, key biodiversity areas, and wetlands designated under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.
Noise and Vibration Impact
Piedmont’s goal is to minimize noise and vibrations from our operations by leveraging a range of state-of-the-art techniques at our Carolina Lithium project. We plan to use modern mining technologies, including controlled blasting, in-pit crushing, and indoor processing. Similarly, we plan to employ noise mitigation techniques at our lithium hydroxide facility in Tennessee.
